Spelling
During each unit there will be ten new spelling words. These will include pattern words and memory words (non-phonetic words). The ten spelling words will be dictated to the class and they will be expected to spell them correctly. The focus of the spelling list will change each week and it will be covered in the weekly packet that will be sent home with your child. There are also two challenge words this week the students can spell correctly to earn extra credit. There are lots of fun and creative ways to for your child to practice their spelling words each week. Memory Words
Please practice the memory words that were sent home each night. If you need to reprint them please see the home page for the printable upload. Students will be expected to read each word correctly. Some fun ways to practice these words are to write them in rice, tape them around the house and have your child read them to you, play hide and seek with them or write them on pieces of paper and play memory with them. If you are looking for more activities to practice in fun ways please let me know and I can provide you with a more extensive list.

Reading
Our reading selections this year are in a book called "Adventures of the SUPERKIDS". This hardcover reader will not be brought home. However, there is a technology piece that will allow your child to read these stories and many other online. Please be looking for information to come home with all the steps to access the online piece at home. It is called SUPERKIDS Online Fun. There will be reading homework in either a paper book form or a worksheet that comes home 2-3 days per week. The books sent home are to be read by your child to an adult. That adult should then sign the book after it's been read and it should be sent back to school so your child can receive credit for completing his/her homework. Please be sure to underline or highlight words that your child struggles reading. You may also add any comments so that I know how reading is going at home. This is extremely helpful to me as I plan future activities for your child at home.

Grammar/Writing
We use a writing program called SCHOOLWIDE. First graders are expected to write opinion, personal narrative by the end of the year.
Students will use inventive writing in the beginning of the year.
We will all work together to do shared, teacher-led writing.
Students will be given time each week to work on individual writing with teacher assistance as they apply the skills previously taught.
During the fourth quarter first graders begin to use technology to publish the writing with teacher assistance.
The student will begin the year learning the difference between a telling sentence and an asking sentence. We are also learning what a noun and a verb is and how all sentences must have both to form a complete sentence. Having your child write their spelling words in sentences throughout the week is a great way to encourage your child to practice good writing skills. The first writing piece your child will work on is opinion writing. They will have several opinion books read to them to model effective opinion writing before applying the skills on their own.
